Millets

Why Millets? / Gluten free option

When Millets were introduced, initially it was not well received by the elite, calling it a poor man’s diet. Its true that in Rural parts of India, millet has always been and continues to be the staple food even today. However it is becoming more popular world over as people seek healthier options in diets.  Millets are the best answer as they are store house of nutrition and have a number of medicinal properties.

Above all they are gluten free and hence offer the best choice for gluten intolerant like me.

Why are Millets ideal?

They stand over other grains for the following reasons as they:

  1.  can grow even on low fertility soils
  2.  are astonishingly low water consuming crops
  3.  don’t demand synthetic fertilizers. In fact, they grow better in the absence of such fertilizers
  4.  are pest free
  5. have the capacity to meet any climate change
  6. include major and micro nutrients needed by the human body. Hence they can help people withstand malnutrition.

As against Rice and wheat, these grains have more nutritive value as per Millet Network of India – Deccan Development Society – FIAN, India

Welcome to my blog

February 10th is celebrated as World Pulses Day. I am an avid fan of whole pulses / lentils. When I took a review of my posts so far, I realised I have as of today posted 22 recipes using whole pulses & legumes. I decided to compile all those recipes and make an eBook that you can download from my site.
